Water quality

Over a third of Greece's underground water is of poor quality, according to the 2022 annual report from the Hellenic Survey of Geology & Mineral Exploration (EAGME). 

According to the findings of an investigation by the Centre for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro, CIN-CG, the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, and the weekly news magazine Monitor, authorities in Montenegro are allowing dangerous waste from a number of companies to pollute the Zeta, to the alarm of residents who say their health is being affected.

More than 12,000 water analyzes in Sofia are performed by laboratory specialists every month. Tests are also made using a technique similar to wine tasting. The aim is to guarantee the quality of the water that the citizens of Sofia drink.

The Regional Health Inspectorate closed 6 swimming pools in Sofia because of a lack of water quality.

Dr Desislava Dragancheva, Head of State Health Control Department, said in the morning block of BNT that the violations have been removed and the pools are already open.

Athens water supplier EYDAP is among 20 companies taking part in the European Union's Intcatch program, which aims to revolutionize water quality monitoring by using robotic boats with innovative sensors. 

Turkish authorities have determined 85 spots that are suitable for swimming in Istanbul this year, the province public health director, Dr. Abdullah Emre Güner, has told the state-run Anadolu Agency in an interview.

The report, entitled European Bathing Water Quality in 2013, said 8.2 per cent of the bathing waters in Albania were classified non-compliant with minimum standards.

"Albania’s rate of non-compliance is comparable to when other countries reported their bathing water quality for the first time," the EEA noted.
