Fire fears mount ahead of summer

The failure of the state apparatus to prevent the massive loss of life and the destruction of homes in the July 2018 wildfires in the east Attica towns of Neos Voutzas, Mati and Kokkino Limanaki have raised concerns about the country's ability to deal with potentially major wildfires this summer.

Family of east Attica fire victim seeks 1.45 mln euros in damages

The relatives of a victim of July's devastating fires in eastern Attica on Thursday lodged a legal suit, seeking 1.45 million euros in damages in the first appeal for compensation from the state for emotional distress.

In their lawsuit, the relatives point to "criminal omissions" by the Greek state, the Regional Authority of Attica and the Municipality of Marathon.

Four arrested for suspected looting in fire-hit settlement

Four people have been arrested for suspected looting in the settlement of Neos Voutzas, east of Athens, which was ravaged by fire.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 26, were arrested by members of the Greek Police's motorcycle-riding DIAS squad after breaking into a home evacuated during the deadly inferno.

The fire has so far claimed the lives of 76 people.
