Hungary Jails Traffickers for Life Over Lorry Migrant Deaths

A court in Hungary imprisoned three Bulgarians and one Afghan for life over the deaths of 71 refugees who perished in a lorry in August 2015. In the so-called Parndorf death van case, which made waves internationally, the migrants suffocated in a refrigerator truck while trying to get from Hungary to Germany.

Bulgarian was convicted in Hungary of four years and eight months in prison for human trafficking in connection with the deaths of 71 migrants in the trunk of a truck in August 2015, Hungarian MIT agency reports.
 
Illegal migrants, including eight women and four children, suffocated in the truck and were found dead on a motorway in Austria near Parndorf.

Three Bulgarians Detained over Death of 71 Migrants in Truck in Austria

Austrian and Hungarian police have launched a joint investigation into the death of 71 migrants, including eight women and four children, in a refrigeration truck in Austria.

An Austrian police official said at a news conference in the town of Eisenstadt that one of the people arrested in Hungary as driver of the truck is a Bulgarian national.

Migrant Deaths Cast Pall Over Balkan Summit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, attending the Western Balkan summit in Vienna, on Thursday said she was "shaken" by the news that the bodies of at least 20 dead migrants - and possibly as many as 40 or 50 - had been found in an abandoned lorry in eastern Austria.

The remains were discovered on Thursday morning on a motorway between Neusiedl and Parndorf.
