Germany defends export of tanks to Qatar

Germany defended on Oct. 23 a decision to allow the export of tanks and artillery to Qatar, saying it was confident the arms would not be used in a war in Yemen between government supporters and the Iran-allied Houthis. 

The newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported on Oct. 23 that four German Leopard 2 tanks and three howitzers had recently been shipped from Germany, bound for Qatar. 

Saudi general dies of wounds in Yemen conflict

A Saudi brigadier general has died in hospital of wounds incurred on the border with Yemen, the armed forces said. 

Ibrahim Omar Ibrahim Hamzi, deputy commander of the 8th brigade in Saudi Arabia's southern Jizan province, was injured "defending the nation and its citizens," the statement said, without providing any details. 

Suicide bomber kills 25 Shiite worshippers in Yemen

A bomb attack at a mosque at the capital of Yemen on Thursday killed at least 25 Shiite worshippers and dozens more during prayers for the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday. The blast at the Balili mosque where Huthi Shiite rebels who control Sanaa pray took place after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives belt at the entrance.

Egypt sends up to 800 ground troops to Yemen's war: Egyptian security sources

As many as 800 Egyptian soldiers arrived in Yemen late on Sept.8, Egyptian security sources said, swelling the ranks of a Gulf Arab military contingent which aims to rout the Iran-allied Houthi group after a five-month civil war. 

It was the first reported deployment of ground troops there by Egypt, which has one of the Arab world's strongest armies.
