Syrian government forces kept up their blistering assault on rebel-held eastern Aleppo yesterday after a divided U.N. Security Council failed to agree on a truce to "save" the war-battered city.

Regime forces and their allies were advancing street by street in the eastern sector which has been out of government hands since 2012.

Residents of war-torn Syria have seen their purchasing power drop by an estimated 80 percent since the beginning of the country's conflict in 2011, the Al-Watan daily said on Nov. 19.

Syrian authorities have arrested Suleiman al-Assad, a cousin of the president accused of killing a military officer in a road rage incident, official news agency SANA said on August 10.

Syria's Foreign Minister is to head to Oman on August 6 in his first visit to a Gulf country since the beginning of his country's brutal war in 2011, according to Syrian media.

Syria's army advanced this weekend west of the ancient city of Palmyra, reopening a key supply route for oil and gas to the capital, a newspaper and monitoring group said June 22.  

"The infantry has made tangible progress in the area of west Biyarat," said the Al-Watan daily, which is close to the government.    

Syrian government aircraft launched at least 15 strikes in and around the ancient city of Palymra on May 25, following its fall to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a monitoring group said.

Syrian government forces have gained ground in a new push north of the divided city of Aleppo, seeking to cut a vital rebel supply line, a monitoring group said on Feb. 17.
      

At least 43 civilians were killed and 150 wounded in a Syrian regime air raid targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the northeast, a monitoring group said on Jan. 21, updating an earlier toll.
      

Syrian troops and Islamist rebels battled close to the armistice line with Israel in the Golan Heights on Sept. 1, as the U.N. pressed efforts to free 44 peacekeepers held by the insurgents.
