A majority of the UN's Security Council condemned Russia's decision to recognize two independent breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin's order to send Russian troops there at an extraordinary meeting last night, agencies reported. During the same meeting, the Russian representative in the Security Council assured that Moscow is open to diplomacy.

BSP has accused the leader of GERB and outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borisov of yet another national betrayal because of decisions related to the UN.

Athens vowed to maintain close ties with Moscow as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited the Greek capital on Wednesday.

"Your visit comes at a crucial time for stability in the wider region," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told Lavrov during a meeting at Maximos Mansion.

Moscow will contribute to efforts to reach a Cyprus peace settlement consistent with UN Security Council resolutions, visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday.

UN's Security Council has supported unanimously the former PM of Portugal Antonio Guterres for the position UN Secretary General.

At the meeting behind closed doors, the 15-member council adopted a resolution nominating Guterres for the post before the General Assembly of the UN, announced diplomats present at the meeting.
