National soccer team's fate placed in veteran's hands

The Hellenic Football Federation on Thursday announced the appointment of 65-year-old Angelos Anastasiadis as coach of the national team after German manager Michael Skibbe was sacked. Anastasiadis, who signed a contract that will run until December 2019, has coached several Greek clubs in the past. [ANA-MPA] 

Greece sacks coach Skibbe after bad Nations League run

Greece has parted ways with German coach Michael Skibbe after the team's disappointing run in the Nations League, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) said on Thursday.

EPO appointed 65-year-old Angelos Anastasiadis as his successor, the first Greek coach for the national team, who is not an interim solution, in 17 years.

Greece named youth coach Costas Tsanas as interim coach of the senior national team on Sunday but there was no official confirmation yet of the sacking of Italian Claudio Ranieri.

There was a triple success for Greek soccer on Thursday as PAOK, Panathinaikos and Asteras Tripolis made it through to the Europa League group stage.

PAOK had a challenging task after a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of its playoff tie to Zimbru Chisinau in Moldova. But the Thessaloniki side made light work of its visitors, winning Thursday's match 4-0.
