Athanasios Martinos has been sworn in as civil governor of Greece's monastic community of Mount Athos, with Aristos Kasmiroglou being sworn in as deputy.
The ceremony at the Foreign Ministry in Athens on Wednesday was attended by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, Deputy Prime Minister Panayiotis Pikrammenos and Deputy Foreign Minister Antonis Diamataris.

Greece mulling defense deal extension with US
Athens is looking to extend the US-Greece defense agreement, also known as the Souda Agreement, by a year when US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visits in October or November, it emerged after Wednesday's meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and US House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey at the Maximos Mansion in Athens.

Meeting focuses on Greek-US ties
US Ambassador in Athens Geoffrey Pyatt and Deputy Foreign Minister Antonis Diamataris on Tuesday highlighted the strategic importance of Greek-US relations, the ties between the two nations and the issues concerning the Greek diaspora in the US.
After the meeting, Pyatt said in a tweet that they had a "great discussion."
