Opposition HDP starts 'justice watch' in Istanbul under tight security

The opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has started its "conscience and justice watch" in Istanbul's Kadıköy district with the participation of several lawmakers. 

The Kurdish issue-focused HDP started its watch on Aug. 1 in Kadıköy's Yoğurtçu Park after spending a week in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır. 

Pioneering Turkish women's rights activist Şirin Tekeli dies at 73

Turkish author, translator and women's rights activist Şirin Tekeli died at the age of 73 in the Aegean province of Muğla on June 13, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Tekeli had been suffering brain cancer for a while in Muğla's Bodrum district. 

Tekeli's body was sent to the Çapa Medical Faculty to be used in medical researches.   

HDP to hold extraordinary congress

The Kurdish issue-focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) will hold an extraordinary congress on May 20 to fulfill its legal procedures and elect a new co-chair to replace the jailed Figen Yüksekdağ, who lost her parliament seat in February and party membership in March after being sentenced to 10 months in jail on terror-related charges. 

HDP calls on European bodies over two educators' hunger strike

As the hunger strike of two former educators dismissed through state of emergency decrees has reached its 62nd day, Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Filiz Kerestecioğlu has sent letters to Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muizniek to raise awareness on the issue.
