The seismic gap extending to 130 kilometers in the Marmara Sea constitutes one of the main causes of the expected major earthquake, experts warned at a meeting held on the anniversary of the deadly Feb. 6 earthquakes that shook 11 southern provinces.

Some five whistling buoys placed in the Marmara Sea that guide equipment used by experts to observe seismic activities have been stolen, officials from Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Center said on Feb. 3.

"Who stole them and for what? We really do not understand," said Doğan Kalafat, the head of the Tsunami Research Department in Kandilli Observatory.

At least 749 earthquakes have hit the Marmara province of Çanakkale since Feb. 6, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has stated. 

A total of 497 earthquakes hit Turkey's Marmara province of Çanakkale between Feb. 6 and Feb. 8, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has said.

A series of earthquakes continued to rock the western Turkish province of Çanakkale for a second day on Feb. 7, with more than 300 aftershocks affecting worried locals in the region, Doğan News Agency has reported.
