A South Korean ruling party lawmaker was struck on the head with a rock on a street in Seoul's upscale Gangnam district on Thursday by an unidentified assailant, Yonhap news agency reported.

Bae Hyun-jin, 40, was taken to hospital, the report said, adding her condition was "not life threatening".

The heir and de facto leader of Samsung group received a presidential pardon on Aug. 12, the latest example of South Korea's long tradition of freeing business leaders convicted of corruption on economic grounds.

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean court sentenced former president Park Geun-hye to eight more years in prison on Friday after finding her guilty on charges of causing loss of government funds and interfering in a 2016 parliamentary election.

Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was formally convicted and sentenced to 24 years in prison on April 6, a year after she was driven from office and arrested over a corruption scandal that saw months of massive street rallies calling for her ouster.

South Korean prosecutors on Feb.27 sought a 30-year jail term for former President Park Geun-hye who was ousted last year amid an influence-peddling scandal that rocked the country’s business and political elite.

Ousted South Korean president Park Geun-Hye is to be charged with accepting millions of dollars’ worth of bribes from the state spy agency, news reports said Jan. 4.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee has filed an appeal against the five-year jail term he was given for bribery and other charges through his lawyer, according to the Seoul Central District Court's website on Aug. 28.

The website did not give any details about the appeal,  which will be assigned to a higher court.

The billionaire head of South Korea's Samsung Group, Jay Y. Lee, was jailed for five years for bribery on Aug. 25 in a watershed for the country's decades-long economic order dominated by powerful, family-run conglomerates.
