President Klaus Iohannis has taken over the term of head of state on Sunday, at the Cotroceni Palace.

Klaus Iohannis and his wife, Carmen, arrived on Sunday at the Cotroceni Palace. The Guard Regiment saluted the new President during a military ceremony.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Saturday said that the overview made by President Traian Basescu is subjective, stating that the head of state mostly highlighted the positive parts and hid the negative ones, "however, forgetting to bring to mind the terrible sufferings of 2010-2011."

President Traian Basescu has held a press conference, on Saturday, at the end of his ten year tenure, treating both current and previous matters within his press statement at the beginning of the press conference.

President Traian Basescu on Saturday said that Romanians can be optimistic in what concerns the evolution of the Romanian economy, maintaining that the prospect is of economic growth.

President Traian Basescu on Saturday thanked Romanians for the honour of being head of state for ten years, showing that he would not forget this honour as long as he lived.

President-elect Klaus Iohannis on Sunday is set to take his presidential oath of office in front of the Parliament, following in the same day to undertake his duties as head of state from Traian Basescu, during a handover ceremony to take place at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.

President Traian Basescu will hold his last press conference as head of state at the Cotroceni Palace on Saturday.

According to the Presidential Administration, the press conference is scheduled at 18,00. On this occasion, President Traian Basescu is expected to present the report of his activity with Romania's Presidency.

President Traian Basescu said on Thursday that the Government may obtain derogation from the European Commission to increase the defence budget by 0.3 percent if it submits a "solid documentation"; he also said he would inform European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker of this matter.

Incumbent president, Traian Basescu on Thursday declared that it has been an honour to represent Romania to the European Council in the past 10 years of mandate since he has participated in this structure's reunions.

President Traian Basescu will be attending on Thursday and Friday the European Council meeting in Brussels.

Before taking off for Brussels, Basescu will give press statements on Thursday, around 9.45 a.m. at the Henri Coanda International Airport, the Presidential Administration reports.
