Pro-Kremlin maestro Gergiev named head of Bolshoi Theater
Russia on Dec. 1 appointed notoriously pro-Kremlin maestro Valery Gergiev, a personal friend of President Vladimir Putin for decades, to lead Moscow's world famous Bolshoi Theater.
Gergiev takes over Russia's main stage at a time when Moscow is increasingly casting culture as a battleground in its clash with the West while troops fight in Ukraine.

For the first time in 30 years, a delegation from the Bulgarian embassy will not take part in the official ceremony organized by the Russian authorities on the occasion of May 24 in front of the monument to the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius in Moscow.
Prominent conductor dropped over Putin ties
Russian conductor Valery Gergiev was dropped by his management company over his ties to Russia President Vladimir Putin.
The 68-year-old Russian had been represented since 2020 by Munich-based Marcus Felsner, who started his own management company that year after leaving Opus3.

London drops Bolshoi, Eurovision bars Russia
The Royal Opera House has canceled a planned tour to London by Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet, while the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has said that Russia will not be allowed an entry in this year's Eurovision Song Contest because of the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Ljubljana Festival to make for another culture-packed summer
The festival will open in Congress square in grand style with a rendition of Carmina Burana by the theatre group La Fura dels Baus.
Russian composer giants will be honoured by the St Petersburg Philharmonic orchestra at the beginning of July, while conductor Valery Gergiev, will return to Ljubljana with the Mariinsky Theatre to close the festival.
