Unique historic tree taken under protection

A 720-year-old historic plane tree in the northern province of Düzce has been placed under protection by the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

The one-of-its-kind tree rumored to have been planted personally by Orhan Bey, the second sultan of the Ottoman Empire, during one of his journeys in 1303, draws a lot of attention since two separate trees grow from its single root.

4.8 magnitude quake hits northern province

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled the southern province of Bolu, while the tremor was also felt in Istanbul, the capital Ankara and the neighboring province of Düzce, the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has announced.

The quake occurred at 1:55 p.m. in the province of Bolu, and its depth was determined as 8.18 kilometers, AFAD said in a statement.

Moderate earthquake shakes Turkey’s northwest, no casualty reported

A magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck Turkey's northwestern province of Düzce, the country's disaster authority announced on Nov. 17.

The quake shook the central district of the province at 3:40 p.m. local time, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

It occurred at a depth of 18.02 kilometers below the surface, it added.
