Genetically pure Norduz sheep saved by village not migrating
Raised only in the eastern province of Van's Gürpınar district, Norduz sheep have been saved from going extinct thanks to the people of Geçerli village who did not migrate from the region in the '90s, with studies for the continuation of the species ongoing since 2007.
Some 325 tons of trout died of ‘oxygen deprivation’
A total of 325 tons of trout perished at two separate production facilities in the eastern province of Van's Gürpınar district as a result of oxygen deprivation.
The dead fish were buried underground and a report was filed by the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry teams.
Urartian speaker to quit post in November
Mehmet Kuşman, who has been a volunteer guard at a Urartian castle in the eastern province of Van and is one of the few people in the world who speaks the Urartian language, has said that he will quit his voluntary job in November.

Urartian grave excites archaeologists
The excavations initiated this year in the Çavuştepe Castle, built by the Urartian King Sarduri II, and the necropolis in its northern part, a tomb of a man, believed to have been belonged to an Urartian ruler and buried with his dog, four horses, cattle and sheep, has been found.

Police seize 670 kg of heroin in eastern Turkey
Turkish police seized 670 kilograms (about 1,477 pounds) of heroin in the eastern Van province over the last five days, the country's Interior Minister said on May 29.
Süleyman Soylu lauded the efforts of the provincial police and anti-narcotics teams, saying the seizures were a heavy blow to the illicit drug trade.

Ancient castle discovered in Van
Academics have discovered a new castle dating back 3,000 years to the Iron Age in the eastern province of Van.
Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ) History of Art Department Professor Mehmet Top, with the help of village head İrfan Yücel, recently revealed the existence of the castle in the Yurtbaşı neighborhood of Gürpınar district.
