Sculpture, frieze fragments found in Olba
A second-century A.D. female statue and two frieze fragments with various depictions have come to light during the ongoing excavations in the ancient city of Olba, which is located in the Silifke district of the southern province of Mersin and once served as the center of the Olba Kingdom in the Hellenistic period.

‘Quake zone at risk of infections passed on by mosquitoes’

Home sales declined by 44.4 percent in June from a year ago to 83,636, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has reported.
That came on top of the 7.7 percent and 36 percent year-on-year declines posted in May and April, respectively.
Mortgaged home sales nosedived 67 percent from May last year to 40,600, which corresponded to 16.1 percent in total sales.

Forest fire in Mersin extinguished after 6 hours
The forest fire in the southern province of Mersin's Anamur district has been extinguished in six hours with the intervention of a large number of aerial and ground teams, while a total of 51 decares in area was damaged in the fire.
Breaking out in a wooded area in Anamur at around 1:30 a.m. on July 10, the fire spread over a wide area in a short time.

Akkuyu nuclear power plant boosts local economy
The Akkuyu nuclear power plant that is being built in the southern province of Mersin, is giving a strong boost to the local economy, according to experts and a local business leader.
Since the start of the construction work, more than 500 new businesses have been registered with the Silifke Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said Nurettin Kaynak, its president.
