Battle of Kunduz

The Taliban said on Aug. 8 they had captured the key Afghan city of Kunduz, a claim confirmed by an AFP correspondent in the vicinity, as fierce fighting raged in the center of a second northern capital.

A bomb hidden in an ambulance killed at least 95 people and wounded about 158 in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday when it blew up at a police checkpoint.

It came just days after a deadly attack on one of the most prominent hotels in the city.

Medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres denied that Taliban fighters were firing from its hospital at Afghan and NATO forces  before a suspected U.S. air strike killed at least 19 people in a battle to oust the Islamist insurgents from an Afghan city. 

President Barack Obama has pledged a full investigation into an apparent US air strike on an Afghan hospital that killed 19 people, in a bombing the UN said could amount to a war crime.
 

A U.S. airstrike in Kunduz, in Afganistan  killed at least 19 people at a hospital run by international medical-aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) early Saturday.

MSF said 12 Afghan staff members and at least seven patients, among them three children, were killed and 37 people more, including patients and medical staff, were wounded.

Afghan forces retook control of the strategic northern city of Kunduz on Oct.1 after a three-day Taliban occupation that dealt a stinging blow to the country's NATO-trained military.

NATO special forces have reached Kunduz to support Afghan troops after the Taliban seized the strategic northern city, the military coalition said on Sept.30.

Afghan forces clashed with Taliban fighters in Kunduz on Sept. 29 as the government launched an operation to retake the centre of the northern city, the first provincial capital to fall to the insurgents since their movement was toppled 14 years ago.

The Taliban Sept. 28 seized half of an Afghan provincial capital, sending panicked residents fleeing as the hardline Islamists for the first time breached a major city since being ousted from power in 2001.
