Sweden announced on Nov. 7 it has chosen the US Patriot missile defense system over that of a Franco-Italian rival, in an estimated one billion-euro deal.

On the anniversary of the failed 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, news broke that Ankara had agreed to pay Moscow $2.5 billion to purchase S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. While the deal is yet to be finalized, its completion will have significant consequences for Turkey-NATO ties.

Russia’s S-400 long-range air defense missile system is most likely to be selected for Turkey’s long-range anti-missile shield, Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Işık has said.

“Russia’s S-400 missile system seems to be the most possible in discussions. Some progress was obtained in the talks, but we are not at the stage of a signature yet,” Işık said Feb. 22 in a televised interview.

In 2013, Turkey selected, over European and U.S. rivals, a Chinese contender for the construction of its first long-range air and anti-missile defense system. Last November it scrapped that competition, saying two local companies would instead build the air defense system.

Turkey has entirely dropped a tentative agreement to purchase a $3.4 billion long-range missile defense system from a Chinese company, ending a two-year saga over the deal, which had worried NATO allies.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency has awarded its "Technology Pioneer Award" to a European system currently competing with a U.S. partnership in a multibillion-dollar competition for a Turkish contract. 

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an visits China, a leading trade partner, with a loaded agenda where he will seek incentives for an assertive missile defense program on the bargaining table. 

Last week, the news fell like a bombshell. Defense Minister ?smet Y?lmaz declared at the Turkish parliament that Turkey?s new defense missile system, to be purchased most probably from China, would not be integrated with NATO?s system. This kicked off a hot discussion on whether Turkey is changing its strategic affiliation and might ultimately withdraw from NATO.
