The rent crisis, which has been affecting millions of citizens for more than two years, has become one of the priorities of the public.

Last year, a 25 percent cap on rent increases was imposed by the government, and the deadline was extended this year.

Following the extension of a 25 percent cap on rent hikes to another year, courts are struggling to handle the huge influx of lawsuits arising from disputes between landlords and tenants over rent increases and eviction.

Landlords who seek lucrative income by leasing out their properties particularly to foreigners at excessive rental prices are now facing problems as new tenants either fail to pay rents or leave the flat before the contract expires.

Within the framework of a regulation that Turkey's Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry, the Justice Ministry and the Treasury and Finance Ministry are working on to solve soaring rent prices, the production of social housing will be increased, housing costs will be reduced and new steps will be taken to enable citizens to purchase houses affordably.

As the prices of renting a flat in Turkey have exploded, leaving house-hunters and students in particular in a state of turmoil, lawyers have warned against landlords asking tenants for an interim raise even though they are entitled to a one-year raise.

Businesses exempt from paying full March rent

The Finance Ministry intends to extend the suspension on rental payments for companies forced to remain closed into March. This will mostly concern enterprises in food service and tourism.
