At a conference organized on the occasion of International Data Protection Day, the commissioner for information of public importance and personal data protection warned against the continuation of the long-standing practice of the state activities being largely, almost exclusively, reduced to the activities of the commissioner.

Unfortunately, we are again face-to-face with a bill written with an étatist mindset. The bill on protection of personal data provides a legal assurance for the state's intervention in this field instead of providing privacy for individuals. 

The state of personal data protection in the field of electronic communications, in particular in internet services, "is very worrying."

This assessment was made on Thursday by Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic.

BELGRADE - Serbia's Commissioner for Information of Public Significance and Protection of Personal Data Rodoljub Sabic said on Monday the state of affairs regarding protection of personal data was unsatisfactory and concerning.

He presented his 2014 report to the parliament and said the number of cases had increased by 15 percent compared to 2013.
