Polls open in 20 EU countries as voting for the European Parliament enters its final day

Polling stations opened across Europe on Sunday as voters from 20 countries cast ballots in elections that are expected to shift the European Union's parliament to the right and could reshape the future direction of the world's biggest trading bloc.

How, when, and where to vote

Voters are called to the ballot box on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to elect 21 candidates from 31 parties who will represent Greece in the European Parliament until 2029.

Voters who opted for postal voting but either did not send their vote or sent it late can vote in person after 11 a.m. at their registered polling station.

The election in Greece, in a nutshell

On Sunday, 9,796,330 Greek citizens will be eligible to vote in the elections for the European Parliament.

Greece elects 21 MEPs in the 720-member Parliament.

A total of 18,380 polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting hours may be extended in individual stations if there is a waiting line at closing time.

Thousands of Greeks abroad register for postal voting

More than 8,000 Greek citizens living abroad have registered on the platform for postal voting within the first two days of its operation, while there is also great interest from domestic voters.

Registration for the June 9 European Parliament elections must be completed 40 days in advance, by April 29, 2024. 

Mail-in ballot bill aims at reducing high voter abstention rate

The mail-in ballot will be used for the first time in Greece at the European Parliament elections in June, after its vote in parliament, the government said.

The relevant bill by the Interior Ministry has been posted for public consultation until January 10, and will be tabled in parliament shortly after.

Countdown begins for local polls as election calendar kicks in

On Thursday at midnight, the election silence comes into force and ends on Sunday at 20:00 with the closing of the polling stations.
On Sunday, December 17, 6,500,165 registered voters will be able to exercise their right to vote at one of a total of 8,273 polling stations.

Local Elections in Bulgaria: Voter Turnout as of 11:00 am is at 12.3%

Voter turnout for the whole country as of 11:00 am is at 12.3%, Central Election Commission Spokesperson Rositsa Mateva said at a briefing Saturday at 11:30 am. 

The lowest turnout is registered in Plovdiv - 7.25%, and the highest in Bolyarovo Municipality (Southeastern Bulgaria) - 33.94%.
