Top court: It’s not judiciary’s call to designate cemevi as place of worship or not
As Turkeyâs public policies regarding cemevis, Alevi places of worship, have been labeled as discriminatory by the top European court on human rights, a Turkish court has made a landmark decision, stating that the determination on whether cemevis are places of worship or not cannot be made by the judiciary.
Euro court fines Turkey 10,000 euros for gender discrimination
The European Court of Human Rights held Dec. 2 that Turkey was to pay Emel Boyraz 10,000 euros because of her dismissal from public sector employment, a state-run electricity company, on the grounds of gender.
Turkish ECHR judge chosen as section president
A Turkish judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) was elected as the president of one of the ECHR's five sections on Dec. 1.
Işıl Karakaş, who has been a judge at the ECHR since May 1, 2008, will serve a three-year term as section president beginning on Jan. 1, 2015.
