Hamas-led gunmen in Gaza executed 18 Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel on Aug. 22, a day after Israel tracked down and killed three top Hamas commanders, the highest-ranking militants to be killed in the six-week war.

The chief Palestinian delegate to truce talks with Israel warned on Aug. 19 that violence could erupt anew in Gaza unless progress is made toward a lasting deal ahead of a midnight deadline in Egyptian-brokered talks.

The Palestinian leadership, along with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, are willing to observe a 24-hour ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip, a senior PLO official said on Tuesday.        

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas is to head a team including Hamas for talks in Cairo on sealing a Gaza ceasefire between the Islamist movement and Israel, an official said July 28.
      

Egypt's army said July 27 it has destroyed 13 more tunnels connecting the Sinai Peninsula to the Gaza Strip, taking to 1,639 the overall number it has laid waste to.
      
Cairo has poured troops into the peninsula to counter a rising insurgency since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year, and its security operation involves the destruction of these tunnels.

Qatar will host a meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday to try to push for an end to fighting in the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 300 people, a senior Qatari source told Reuters.
