Family rescued from burning building in southern Athens

A family was rescued from a burning building in the southern Athenian suburb of Tavros in the early hours of Friday after a blaze broke out in an empty apartment above their own.

The fire started on the second flood and spread upward, sending large amounts of smoke throughout the building.

The couple and their 5-year-old daughter were the building’s only tenants.

Large wildfire threatens southern Greek village

Greek authorities have partially evacuated a southern village near a major archaeological site due to a large wildfire that is being swept on by strong winds.

The fire brigade says that nine aircraft and helicopters are dropping water over the blaze that broke out Monday near Mavromati, a village of about 300 people some 200 kilometers (124 miles) southwest of Athens.

Fire at US embassy in Athens causes minor damage

A fire that broke out in the basement of the US embassy in Athens on Sunday night caused only minor damage, authorities said.

A computer and some documents were burned during the fire, which started at around 11 p.m.

Seven fire engines were called to the scene and the 21 firefighters present soon brought the blaze under control.

Rescue workers pull man's body out of Attica well

Rescue workers on Tuesday retrieved the body of a 54-year-old man from the bottom of a well in Stamata, eastern Attica.

A rescue effort involving five fire engines and 12 firefighters was launched after locals reported the man’s fall.

It remained unclear how the 54-year-old fell into the 17-meter-deep well.
