Garbage truck

A baby believed to be only a few days old was found abandoned in a semi-buried waste container in the southwestern city of Kalamata on Wednesday morning, and a 25-year-old Georgian woman, believed to be its mother, was arrested a few hours later.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Friday unveiled an initiative to improve trash collection in the center of the Greek capital.

Local authority workers will go on strike on Monday in protest at a series of accidents suffered by garbage collectors.

Authorities have seized contraband items weighing more that 5.5 tons that were being peddled on central streets and squares in the port city of Piraeus, an official announcement said on Saturday.

The items included clothing and home appliances. All the contraband was loaded onto municipal garbage trucks and destroyed.

A woman working for the municipal authority of Pyrgos in the western Peloponnese died after being crushed by a garbage truck in the seaside town of Katakolo on Wednesday.

According to initial reports, the 30-year-old woman appears to have fallen off the small platform used by bin collectors on the back of the truck and ended up beneath the vehicle's wheels.

The municipal authority of Thessaloniki in northern Greece is moving at full throttle to clear up trash that has piled up on the city streets during a two-week strike by garbage collectors.
