Genetically modified maize

Mexico on June 24 began imposing a 50 percent tariff on white corn imports, a move the president says looks to boost national production and prevent imports of genetically modified corn.

Europe's top court ruled on Wednesday that Italy had been wrong to ban cultivation of an EU-approved genetically modified (GMO) maize as it had failed to show there was a serious risk to public health or the environment, reported Reuters. 

Turkey's Biosecurity Council has approved the use of three types of genetically modified soybeans and one type of genetically modified corn as animal food in a decision published in the Official Gazette on Aug. 2, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported. 

Romania has decided to join a minority of EU countries that will allow the growth of genetically modified crops.

New EU rules permit the cultivation of GM crops if they are deemed "healthy and safe".

The law, adopted in March, cleared the way for new GM crops to be approved after years of deadlock.
