MUNICH (AP) — The first keg has been tapped and the beer is flowing as the 185th Oktoberfest gets underway in Munich.

Olympic Brewery has invested 3.2 million euros in its plant in Sindos, Thessaloniki, for a new production line of 20-liter PET beer kegs that prolong product freshness.

These single-use kegs allow beer to stay fresh for up to 31 days after being opened, instead of five, as is the case with the conventional metallic barrels used in bars and restaurants, for example.

When I first heard about it, I thought, that's it, everything has been invented, we as mankind can invent nothing else, we have hit our technological nirvana.

The ongoing developments in the Balkans evoke strong memories of 1914, RIA Novosti contributor Dmitri Dobrov noted, warning that the region may soon turn into the powder keg of Europe again.
