Uptick in rhino poaching as S Africa eases virus curbs

Rhino poaching in South Africa was 15 percent higher in 2021 than the preceding year as coronavirus restrictions that limited movement were eased, official figures showed on Feb. 8.

A total of 451 animals were killed in 2021, which is still 24 percent lower than the pre-pandemic year 2019, the country's environment department reported.

'Horrific' record 1,020 rhino killed in South Africa

A record 1,020 rhinos have been poached in South Africa this year, the government said Nov. 20, scuppering multiple efforts by authorities to curb the slaughter of the endangered species.
      
The vast Kruger National Park, has been hit the hardest by poachers, with 672 killed inside the park, which is roughly the size of Wales.
