SYRIZA's Parliamentary Group Chairman Sokratis Famellos denounced the government during Thursday's Parliament debate on the wildfires, saying that despite the announcements, the country appeared unprepared for the danger.

Andreas Loverdos, a former socialist minister and Member of Parliament, has announced his withdrawal from the PASOK socialists.

In a statement posted on social media on Wednesday, Loverdos stated that he has sent a letter to the party leader, Nikos Androulakis, explaining the reasons behind his resignation, which he described as "purely political."

Center-left PASOK has every reason to celebrate Sunday's result as it has increased its share of the vote by 50 percent over two election cycles.

The sense of elation was not least felt by its leader Nikos Androulakis, who has strengthened his hand.

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis called on Greeks to vote for his party on Sunday from the village of Arkalochori on Crete where he voted.

PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL) leader Nikos Androulakis interprets the result of the May 21 election, which gave the conservatives a 20-percentage point lead over the main opposition, as a failure of SYRIZA and categorically dismisses any possibility of cooperation with New Democracy, even if the latter does not secure an outright majority.
