Traffic will be diverted on parts of Kifissias Avenue, one of the capital's main thoroughfares, from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. until June 13 due to works, which began on Monday, for the installation of a fiber optics network.

Traffic will flow normally on May 31 and June 2.

There will also be traffic disruption in the wider area of Kifissia in northern Athens for the same reason. 

The telecoms regulator is increasing charges for conventional ADSL internet connections and reducing those that rely on optical fibers (VDSL and FTTx) in an effort to persuade web users in Greece to move toward the latter.

The average speed of internet connections in Greece has increased since last year but is still well below what is advertised, data from the Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) have shown.

Greece's biggest telecom operator OTE Group flicked the switch on the first "fiber-to-the-home" ultra-fast internet connection on Tuesday, which will help the country make a leap to faster speeds within the next four years.
