Restoration of historic Greek orphanage needs ‘big budget’

Described as Europe's largest wooden building, the Prinkipo Greek Orphanage in Büyükada, the largest of Istanbul's nine Princes' Islands, will be saved from a possible collapse with a planned but expensive restoration work.

The historic structure will require some 20 million euros for restoration, according to experts, who completed surveying the building following long delays.

Europa Nostra, the leading European heritage organization, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) Institute have said in a recently issued report that the restoration of the Prinkipo Greek Orthodox Orphanage in Istanbul would cost at least 40 million euros and would take four to fıve years to complete.

The Greek Orphanage on Istanbul’s Büyükada, largest of the Princes’ Islands, has been included in the “Seven Most Endangered” programme for 2018 by Europa Nova, the leading heritage organization in Europe, and the European Investment Bank Institute.
