Five models on way for idyllic Ayder Plateau in Black Sea region

Five firms commissioned with preparing a layout for the transformation of the Ayder Plateau in the Çamlıhemşin district of the Black Sea province of Rize will each offer a model to the authorities, with a two-story limit imposed by the government for development in the idyllic area.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in the Black Sea province of Rize has launched an investigation into five suspects from the Medipol Başakşehir football team in connection with an assault on two journalists following a game with Çaykur Rizespor a day earlier, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Atatürk statue in Turkey's Rize moved to different location amid controversy

A statue of Turkey's founding-father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was removed on Dec. 22 from the main town square of the Black Sea province of Rize and was re-erected on a ceremony area in front of the Rize governor's office amid reactions from a group of people who said the work was ideologically motivated. 

Rize's local poet named a 'living human treasure'

Osman Efendioğlu, a local poet living in Turkey's Black Sea province of Rize, has been selected as a Living Human Treasure by UNESCO. 

The 80-year-old Efendioğlu says he knows 90 percent of "atma türkü" (a type of public poetry unique to the eastern Black Sea region) spoken in Rize and is working to collect all this poetry in a book. 

Heavy snowfall halts daily life across Turkey

Heavy snowfall and blizzards have frozen day-to-day life across Turkey, with hundreds of village roads blocked off in eastern parts of the country.

A total of 837 roads leading to villages in the eastern provinces of Erzurum, Erzincan, Ardahan, A?r?, Tunceli and Kars were reported to be blocked by heavy snowfall and blizzards, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Mayor rules out referendum to remove Atatürk statue in Turkey's north

The mayor of the Black Sea province of Rize has ruled out the claim in several media reports that a referendum would be held to decide whether an Atatürk statue at a major public area should be replaced with a tea glass-shaped statue as part of a reconstruction plan of the area.
