Russian irredentism

A protest is currently underway in front of the Russian Embassy in Sofia against Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The protest started at 18.00 p.m. It is organized by the former MP in the 45th and 46th National Assembly Tsetska Bachkova. The civil discontent is entitled: "Putin, stop".

"All indications are that Russia is continuing its plans to attack Ukraine. At the moment, the world sees only a continuation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with a more Russian military presence and a 'further invasion' of the already invaded country.

A request for the use of Russian armed forces abroad by President Vladimir Putin in the Federation Council (upper house of parliament) has been approved. Such a request came a little earlier today, as previously announced by Senate President Valentina Matvienko.

According to her, the Council will consider the request in an open session.

"It will be done in the future," he said.
He added that the use of the army outside the borders of Russia was signed, which means that it will help those republics militarily as well.
Putin said that Moscow had talked with Western countries and the EU, and that the conflict was not being discussed.

All parliamentary parties, except Vazrazhdane, condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics of Ukraine as independent states. A joint declaration of the National Assembly was not reached, and the parties of the ruling coalition failed to gather for such a meeting.

Military assistance to Donbas is ruled out for now, but Moscow is ready to offer it if there is a threat.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has lied to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron by promising to refrain from provocative actions in Donbas pending a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

Putin Recognizes the Donetsk and Luhansk Republics as Independent States

The past 48 hours have been filled with an influx of reports regarding the crisis in Ukraine. On February 16th Russia announced that it would not attack Ukraine and withdrew some of its troops from the border with Ukraine. The media regarded this perceived act of calming as indication that crisis has been averted.

European Union countries have agreed to impose a limited package of sanctions on Russia. The UN Security Council also met urgently.

EU prepares the first package of sanctions

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said earlier today that Kiev could sever diplomatic relations with Russia after Moscow decided to recognize two regions of eastern Ukraine as independent, Reuters reports.
