The FBI has unlocked the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino attackers, officials said March 28, ending a heated legal standoff with Apple that had pitted US authorities against Silicon Valley.

The battle between the FBI and Apple over encryption moved to Congress on March 1, with both sides arguing security is at risk in the legal wrangling over accessing a locked iPhone.

Apple chief Tim Cook went public on Feb. 24 in his battle with the FBI, saying that unlocking an iPhone in the name of fighting terrorism would be "bad for America."  

A court order the U.S. government requested to force Apple to unlock an iPhone linked to the San Bernardino shooting rampage is about "the victims and justice," FBI Director James Comey said.

U.S. President Barack Obama, in a rare primetime speech designed to reassure a jittery nation, vowed late on Dec. 6 that America will destroy the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and hunt down its followers at home or abroad.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) said on Dec. 4 that the married couple who killed 14 people in a mass shooting in Southern California were its followers, and FBI agents raided a home apparently belonging to a friend of the husband. 

Islamic State (IS) militants claimed responsibility for the shooting in San Bernardino in southern California on Wednesday, which claimed the lives of fourteen people and left 21 injured.

Militants of IS described the two perpetrators, who stormed a Christmas party at the county department of public health as "supporters" of the terrorist group.

ISIS extremists started celebrating the shooting in San Bernardino, where 14 people died and 17 were wounded, creating the hashtag #America_Burning.

The Islamic State, however, has not yet taken credit for the shootings in the postings.

Police on Dec. 2 identified the two suspects, a man and a woman, who died in an exchange of fire with police following the mass shooting that killed 14 people in California.
