The front-runners in Sunday’s election, SYRIZA’s Alexis Tsipras and New Democracy’s Vangelis Meimarakis addressed supporters on Thursday, the first in Irakleio, Crete and the second in central Athens.

Meimarakis pointed to the need for political consensus after the snap election to exit the crisis.

Conservative New Democracy leader Vangelis Meimarakis on Wednesday evening aimed his message at a demographic group where he’s lagging behind rival leftist Alexis Tsipras: the younger generation.

Speaking in an auditorium in Athens’ “Soho-esque” Gazi district, Meimarakis warned against abstention in Sunday’s election, a prospect that worries both front-running parties.

Miners protest unit’s closure outside debate venue

A group of miners from the Skouries gold production and processing complex of northern Greece rallied and blocked the main gate of state broadcaster ERT  early Monday evening, an hour before a scheduled debate (19.00 GMT) between leftist SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras and conservative New Democracy president Vangelis Meimarakis.

Conservative Main Opposition Vangelis Meimarakis was seen by many as having the upper hand in the political leaders’ debate that took place on Wednesday. His goal during the debate was to tear down the profile of former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and expose the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government’s inadequacies.
