Turkish coup d'état attempt

A Turkish court issued a new arrest warrant on March 9 against businessman Osman Kavala, who was re-arrested last month after being acquitted in a separate trial, according to local media reports.

Kavala on Feb. 18 was acquitted from charges in connection with Gezi Park protests in 2013. He was re-arrested on Feb. 19, as part of a probe into the defeated coup attempt of 2016.

The European Union's high representative for foreign and security policies, Josep Borrell, has suggested to work with Turkey in addressing common challenges stemming from regional conflicts, as he met with Turkey's defense and interior minister late March 3.

Turkish prosecutors issued detention warrants for 37 suspects over their alleged links to the FETÖ, the group behind the 2016 defeated coup attempt, state-run Anadolu Agency said on Feb. 25.

Authorities in the central Konya province issued detention warrants for the suspects, some of whom are active-duty soldiers in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK).

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli on Feb. 18 stressed that coming up with rumors that a new coup attempt in Turkey was underway was a "betrayal to the country."

"If anyone considers a coup d'état, they would see the resistance of the 82 million of Turkey," he said, speaking at his party's parliamentary group meeting.

Security forces on Feb. 18 detained 50 suspected members of the FETÖ, the group behind the defeated coup attempt of 2016, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Police detained four in western Turkey on Jan. 20 over suspected links to the FETÖ, the terror group behind the 2016 defeated coup.

The counter-terrorism police detained an ex-soldier in Turkey on Jan. 16 over his links to the FETÖ, the terror group behind the 2016 defeated coup attempt.

Former Lt. Gen. Metin İyidil was detained in the capital Ankara after a local court issued an arrest warrant over the prosecutors' demand.

Turkish police on Jan. 14 detained at least 115 people for suspected links to the FETÖ, the group behind the 2016 defeated coup attempt, security sources said.

A Romanian judge has blocked the extradition to Turkey of a Turkish schools director linked to the man accused by Ankara of orchestrating a failed 2016 coup, hours after the director was arrested on Tuesday.
