The Turkish Five

A 13-year-old Turkish student has won the International Pianele Piano Competition in Germany, becoming the youngest pianist ever to achieve this feat.

Arya Su Gülenç from the northwestern province of Bursa was one of the four winners of the competition held in Fulda, Germany, on Aug. 6, as she was hailed as a "Wonder Child" in the German press.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) City Orchestra will give a concert on Feb 10 at the Cemal Reşit Rey (CRR) Concert Hall, performing the songs of the legendary pop group ABBA. The concert, to be conducted by Üstüner Büyükgönenç, will begin at 8 pm. The event is free of charge.

The Anatolian Wind Quintet, which aims to show the polyphony of Anatolia to the world, will take the stage at the Cemal Reşit Rey (CRR) Concert Hall on Dec 12 to present their project called 'Tangology.'

During the event, the process from the birth of tango culture to the present will be presented to art lovers with a chronological narrative.

The Culture and Tourism Ministry has launched a project to hold concerts during the summer after almost over a year of a shutdown of the entertainments sector.

Professor Muammer Sun, a doyen composer and educator who made several contributions to the development of Contemporary Polyphonic Turkish Music, passed away on Jan. 16 at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital due to multiple organ failure. He was 89.

He was taken to the hospital on the night of Jan. 15 for his treatment.

Turkish composer and musicologist Ahmet Adnan Saygun will be commemorated at a concert in Istanbul.

The Ottoman poet Fuzuli's "Water Eulogy" will be performed as an oratorio on March 19 at the Cemal Reşit Rey (CRR) Concert Hall.

Turkish composer and pianist Fazıl Say will perform "İzmir Suite," a piece he composed in dedication to the 150th anniversary of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, for the first time on Oct. 30 at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center. 

The Ankara Music Festival, organized by the Sevda-Cenap and (SCA) Music Foundation, will turn 35 this year on April 4, with a concert by the Presidential Symphonic Orchestra (CSO) under the baton of Rengim Gökmen at the CSO Hall. 

German Lopez, a timple player from Gran Canaria, will greet music lovers on March 23 at the Cemal Reşit Rey (CRR) Concert Hall in Istanbul at 8 p.m. The timple is known as a five-string instrument unique to Gran Canaria. Lopez has performed in various festivals around the world, playing folk, jazz, classical, funk and flamenco music with his instrument.
