The world is "losing the race" against climate change, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned Thursday, demanding bolder action from governments to arrest runaway warming, reports AFP. 

Guterres delivered a no-holds-barred appraisal to business and political leaders gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which has featured much hand-wringing on the planetary crisis this week.

Nations on Dec. 16 struck a deal to breathe life into the landmark 2015 Paris climate treaty after marathon U.N. talks that failed to match the ambition the world's most vulnerable countries need to avert dangerous global warming.

At the opening of the conference, the heads of state and government are taking part, with the participation of the prime ministers of France, Spain, the Netherlands, as well as the presidents of Austria and Bulgaria and many other world leaders.

With the direst warnings yet of impending environmental disaster still ringing in their ears, representatives from nearly 200 nations gather Sunday in Poland to firm up their plan to prevent catastrophic climate change, reports AFP. 

The levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the main driver of climate change, have hit a new record high, the UN said Thursday, warning that the time to act was running out, reports AFP.

The "One Planet Summit," launched last year by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to accelerate the implementation of the 2015 pact.

AFP - With 2018 shaping up as the fourth hottest year on record, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Monday that the world must take action in the next two years to avert the disastrous consequences of runaway climate change.

"Climate change is the defining issue of our time -- and we are at a defining moment," Guterres said in an address at UN headquarters in New York.

The EU ambassadors of the member states confirmed, on behalf of the Council, the provisional agreement reached on 19-20 June between the Bulgarian Presidency and the European Parliament on the Energy Union governance regulation.

The Council today adopted a regulation establishing a framework for the inclusion of greenhouse gas emissions and removals from land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) in the 2030 climate and energy framework.
