War in Donbas

Ljubljana – Slovenia’s officials strongly condemned Russia’s recognition of the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine as independent entities. Prime Minister Janez Janša called for the EU to offer Ukraine the prospect of full membership. Slovenia is also ready to support the country’s membership of the EU.

Paris/Ljubljana – By recognising the independence of breakaway regions Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, Russia has violated international law and principles, Foreign Minister Anže Logar said in a statement on the sidelines of an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers on Tuesday. “Now we’re left with only a set of bad options,” he added.

A protest is currently underway in front of the Russian Embassy in Sofia against Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The protest started at 18.00 p.m. It is organized by the former MP in the 45th and 46th National Assembly Tsetska Bachkova. The civil discontent is entitled: "Putin, stop".

Bulgaria Condemns Putin's Recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk

All parliamentary parties, except Vazrazhdane, condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics of Ukraine as independent states. A joint declaration of the National Assembly was not reached, and the parties of the ruling coalition failed to gather for such a meeting.

Military assistance to Donbas is ruled out for now, but Moscow is ready to offer it if there is a threat.

The past 48 hours have been filled with an influx of reports regarding the crisis in Ukraine. On February 16th Russia announced that it would not attack Ukraine and withdrew some of its troops from the border with Ukraine. The media regarded this perceived act of calming as indication that crisis has been averted.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said earlier today that Kiev could sever diplomatic relations with Russia after Moscow decided to recognize two regions of eastern Ukraine as independent, Reuters reports.

The Russian ministry said Moscow must first ratify the friendship agreements with Donetsk and Luhansk

Russia's decision to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine adds fuel to the flames in the crisis, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli said on Feb. 22.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) has completely changed the world order." This was announced by Serbian President Alexander Vucic on RTV Pink.
