The average price of a taxicab license plate in Istanbul has increased 6.6 percent in just two days, after the city municipality declared its support for the government's new regulation to prevent "illegal passenger transportation," particularly aimed at Uber drivers.

Investor Warren Buffett was in a hurry to invest the $ 3 billion colossal amount in Uber, but the negotiations on the deal failed.

Buffett himself confirmed to CNBC that earlier this year he was discussing the investment with the Uber CEO Dara Kosroushahi, who was in the process of rebranding the company.

The number of Uber vehicles in Istanbul has reached 10,100, while the number of Uber drivers is 15,000, growing in numbers every day, the chair of a transportation association told daily Habertürk on May 31. 

Taxi associations have said they are satisfied with the Turkish government's new regulation to "prevent illegal passenger transportation," declaring the "end of Uber" in Turkey.

Uber announced on May 22 it would start its first taxi-hailing pilot program in Japan this summer, as it bids to break into a tough market in the world's third largest economy.

Amid recent tension between Uber and taxi drivers in Turkey, Mustafa Ilıcalı, parliament's transportation commission spokesperson, has proposed a system envisaging the administering of all taxis from a "centralized system."

The ride-hailing app Uber announced Thursday that it would be suspending its licensed services in Greece from next Tuesday, reacting to new laws passed last month that restrict its operations.

The move relates to the service UberX, which uses professional licensed drivers, not to UberTaxi, which uses local taxi drivers and which Uber said it would seek to continue with.
