EU's Frontex deploys guard teams on Greek-Albanian border

Teams of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, or Frontex, are joining Albania's police to patrol its land and sea borders for migrants and crime.

European Union Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos and Frontex head Fabrice Leggeri were in Tirana on Tuesday to launch "the first ever joint operation on the territory of a neighboring non-EU country."

Albania Debates Recruiting Volunteers to Aid Police

The draft law on recruiting unpaid volunteers to work alongside Albania's police force and assist them in some of their duties is expected to be debated by MPs in parliament by the end of this week.

"The voluntary police officer is a volunteer who offers citizens and the state police help with enforcing the law, preventing crime and dealing with civil emergency," the draft says.

Albania's police launched yet another massive operation aiming to the curb the marijuana trade as the harvest season nears. 

"We have engaged about 450 officers from the police and the Rapid Intervention Force for the operation carried in the Dukagjin area. We encountered no incidents," a police statement on Tuesday said.
