Number of abandoned animals increases in Turkey amid virus

Pet adoption rates have decreased by 90 percent in Turkey, as people have confined themselves to their houses.

While there has been a pet adoption boom in some countries such as the U.S., U.K. and Australia in times of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an opposite trend in Turkey, with much fewer people wanting to adopt pets.

Man detained after footage emerges of him kicking dog in western Turkey

Police have detained a man in the western province of İzmir after video footage emerged of him kicking a dog sitting on the pavement.

The footage, gathered from surveillance camera footage on a street in the Aliağa district of İzmir, prompted outrage after it emerged online on Sept. 17. 

Animal activists buy kittens seized at Bulgarian border in auction

A Turkish animal rights foundation has rescued six kittens that were illegally smuggled into Turkey from Bulgaria after buying them at an auction in the border province of Edirne.

Zuhal Aslan of the Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP) bought the six for 4,250 Turkish Liras in the auction.

Pet paintings support Turkey's stray animals in new HAYTAP project

Animal lovers can provide support for Turkey's stray animals by commissioning portraits of their own pets, as part of a new project by the Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP). 

HAYTAP's "Let's Paint Your Pet" project will allow pet owners to both get a portrait of their pet while also donating to stray animals at the same time.
