The former mayor of Bacau (county seat, northeast of Bucharest) Romeo Stavarache has been arraigned and placed under arrest pending trial on Friday for five charges of bribery, a release of the National Anticorruption Directorate informed AGERPRES.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest (ARCB) asserts that authorities drag their feet in enforcing a one-and-a-half year old court sentence requiring them to demolish the Cathedral Plaza building, erected near the St. Joseph Metropolitan Cathedral; in a release to AGERPRES on Saturday, ARCB repeats its demand to President Traian Basescu's intervention in the matter.

The men’s lawyers said on Monday that their clients, arrested last week and accused by prosecutors of organizing terrorist acts, should be freed on bail.

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA - The detention of Citizens' Initiative Serbia, Democracy, Justice leader Oliver Ivanovic has been extended by another two months, his attorney, lawyer Nebojsa Vlajic, said on Friday.

In a statement to Tanjug, Vlajic said that the decision to extend Ivanovic's detention was made by an Eulex pretrial judge of the Basic Court in Kosovska Mitrovica.

Policeman Cristian Cioaca was irrevocably sentenced by the Pitesti Court of Appeals to 15 years and 8 months of imprisonment as well as a 5-year revocation of some rights following the trial in which he was accused of murdering his wife, lawyer Elodia Ghinescu.

Iasi County's former prefect Radu Prisacaru was sentenced on Thursday, by the High Court of Cassation and Justice, to four years' imprisonment for committing the crime of bribe taking, in a case related to the restitution of a land plot.

Mayor of Smederevo found guilty in corruption case

BELGRADE -- The Higher Court in the town of Smerevo has found Mayor Jasna Avramović guilty on charges of "extended criminal act of accepting bribes."

The court said that Avramović, a medical doctor by trade, enabled the granting of illegal pensions, and received money in return.
