Parties name election hopefuls

The race for the May 25 European elections heated up Monday with parties confirming their candidates for the crucial vote and tensions rising as campaigning positions were thrashed out.

Time for hope, not fear

Many Greeks voted out of fear in the back-to-back 2012 general elections. They did so to keep the country afloat, in the eurozone and safe from calamity. Now, thanks to their votes and the efforts of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, those fears have abated.

Incumbent Athens mayor chides rival over remarks


Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Friday chided Aris Spiliotopoulos, his New Democracy rival in May’s local elections, after the deputy likened Athens to Kabul in the wake of Thursday’s bomb explosion outside the Bank of Greece.

“He is undermining the city’s effort to improve in terms of tourism,” Kaminis said on Skai Radio.

Judges get tough as Baltakos probe gets under way


Former government secretary general Takis Baltakos arrives at a prosecutor's office to give a testimony in Athens yesterday. Baltakos, a top aide to the Greek prime minister, resigned last week after a leaked video showed him suggesting the government had tried to press judges to jail lawmakers from the far-right Golden Dawn party.
