2,839 detained over coup attempt

A total of 2,839 soldiers have been detained over the charges of coup attempt, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said July 16 in a press briefing. 

There are high-ranking officers among the detained.

Broadcaster CNNTürk said four of them were generals and 29 of them were colonels.

Athens says it backs 'democratically elected government' in Turkey

Athens backs the "democratically elected government" in Turkey, government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili said early Saturday following the attempted military coup in the neighboring country.

Gerovasili added that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will call Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim on Saturday.
