PEN International awards dissident Turkish journalists Dündar and Gül

The PEN International Office in Germany has given its Herman Kesten Award to the former editor-in-chief of daily Cumhuriyet, Can Dündar, and Cumhuriyet's Ankara bureau chief Erdem Gül. 

Sascha Feuchert, vice chairman of the PEN Germany Office, said "two brave fighters of freedom" were awarded a prize worth 10,000 euros in his speech at the Nov. 17 award ceremony.

Police raid house of former Cumhuriyet editor in-chief Can Dündar

Istanbul police raided the house of Can Dündar in the Çengelköy neighborhood of Istanbul, the former editor-in-chief of daily Cumhuriyet, as part of an operation against the newspaper on Oct. 31.

Police could not find anyone at home, but Can Dündar's wife, Dilek Dündar, flew from İzmir to Istanbul to open the house to police.

Crime and punishment are personal

One of the plotters of the July 15 attempted coup, the Air Forces "imam" of the Fethullah gang, Adil Öksüz, somehow cannot be found. But Öksüz's mother-in-law Hatice Yıldırım has been arrested. You must have seen her photos in the papers; she is an elderly lady in a wheelchair. It is not clear which stage of the coup planning she was involved in. 

Int'l press organizations call on Turkish authorities to allow former Cumhuriyet editor's wife to travel freely

Two international press organizations have called on Turkish authorities to return the passport of Dilek Dündar, the wife of former daily Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Can Dündar, after she was banned from traveling abroad on Sept. 3.
