Donald Trump

Dangerous times

In an interview with Alexis Tsipras back in 2012, I had asked him who he'd call first if he were prime minister and had learned of a serious incident in the Aegean. It was obvious that he hadn't given much thought to the scenario but he said, "Mr Erdogan, of course," in reference to the then Turkish prime minister and now president.

NY Times: Bulgaria Grows Uneasy as Trump Complicates Ties to Russia

The prospect of US President Donald Trump's moving closer to Russia has scrambled the strategy of "balancing East and West" used for decades by countries like Bulgaria, the New York Times says.

Trump and trade

Like Mexico, Canada is in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Donald Trump has described as "the worst trade deal...ever signed in this country." Unlike Mexico, Canada thinks that Trump is not planning to hurt it. But no good deed goes unpunished, so Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should be very careful.

Chancellor Merkel comes to Ankara

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in Ankara on Thursday. This was her first visit after the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt. Like all other visitors, she was shown the section of the Turkish Parliament that was bombed by Turkey's own fighter jets on that dreadful night. In the past, foreign dignitaries would visit Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Mausoleum when they visited Ankara.

The Trump Hurricane

U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration ban against seven Muslim-majority countries has shaken up the whole world. Yet his anti-immigrant and Islamophobic policy has only exposed the already existing and deep-rooted polarity in the world.
