Erdoğan and Trump to talk on phone soon: Presidential spokesperson
A highly anticipated phone call between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump is slated to take place in the coming days, a presidential spokesperson said over the weekend.
Dangerous times
In an interview with Alexis Tsipras back in 2012, I had asked him who he'd call first if he were prime minister and had learned of a serious incident in the Aegean. It was obvious that he hadn't given much thought to the scenario but he said, "Mr Erdogan, of course," in reference to the then Turkish prime minister and now president.

NY Times: Bulgaria Grows Uneasy as Trump Complicates Ties to Russia
The prospect of US President Donald Trump's moving closer to Russia has scrambled the strategy of "balancing East and West" used for decades by countries like Bulgaria, the New York Times says.
An eager EU member, Bulgaria has seen Russian influence creep in "as rising nationalism caused support for the union to wane", the report goes on.
Is Turkey a US ally, Mr Trump?
It is good and perhaps necessary that U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order for a "Plan to Defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" on Jan. 28. It is necessary because the strategy of former President Barack Obama obviously did not work.

Trump's order ignores ISIL victims in Turkey
A presidential memorandum recently signed by U.S. President Donald Trump to instruct the Pentagon to develop a comprehensive plan to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Syria (ISIL) ignored the group's attacks in Turkey, as well as its victims, while citing incidents that occurred in the U.S. and in some European countries.

Trump and trade
Like Mexico, Canada is in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Donald Trump has described as "the worst trade deal...ever signed in this country." Unlike Mexico, Canada thinks that Trump is not planning to hurt it. But no good deed goes unpunished, so Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should be very careful.

Chancellor Merkel comes to Ankara
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in Ankara on Thursday. This was her first visit after the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt. Like all other visitors, she was shown the section of the Turkish Parliament that was bombed by Turkey's own fighter jets on that dreadful night. In the past, foreign dignitaries would visit Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Mausoleum when they visited Ankara.

In the eyes of his sympathizers, U.S. President Donald Trump is always great. Whatever he does, he never looks ugly to them. He may have unsettled the entire world, but Trump fans here in Turkey are still rejoicing. You can never hear them questioning the kind of disaster Trump's presidency is.
