Şebnem Korur Fincancı

The central council members of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) have been dismissed on the grounds of allegedly "engaging in activities contrary to their founding objectives."

Police have detained Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the head of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), after she called for an investigation into allegations that the Turkish military used chemical weapons in northern Iraq.

The citizenship of the chairwoman of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) should be revoked and the body should be closed, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has said, in reaction to claims that the army has used chemical weapons in the fight against terror.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has criticized the government over its policies introduced against the pandemic, reiterating that medical experts' advises must be heard in fighting the virus.

Turkish author, translator and women's rights activist Şirin Tekeli died at the age of 73 in the Aegean province of Muğla on June 13, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Tekeli had been suffering brain cancer for a while in Muğla's Bodrum district. 

Tekeli's body was sent to the Çapa Medical Faculty to be used in medical researches.   

Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the chair of the Turkish Human Rights Foundation (TİHV), received the Physicians for Human Rights' (PHR) Human Rights Award on April 18 at a ceremony in New York.

The PHR released a statement regarding Fincancı, hailing her as an anti-torture expert who has dedicated her career to defending human rights.    

An Istanbul court on Jan. 13 sentenced musician Şanar Yurdatapan to one year and three months in prison in a case for participating in the "Editor-in-Chief on Duty" solidarity campaign with the now closed daily Özgür Gündem, marking the first conviction in the case.

The bill in Turkey which will enable "the release of sexual abuse suspects by marrying them with the victim" caused an outcry; however, Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the head of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV), is "grateful" for the bill.
