The government's strategy of boosting the presence of the Greek Police (ELAS) at potential targets appears to be the key reason for its ineffective response to an escalation of violence by self-styled anarchists in recent weeks.

In a statement issued a day after anarchists defaced his Athens residence to express solidarity with jailed November 17 terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas, US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt described the attack as "vandalism" and the hitman as a "murderer" while expressing gratitude for the response of the Greek government.

I passed by United States Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt's residence on Thursday morning on my bicycle. The wall was already repainted when I returned. The official response, a tweet referring to "childish vandalism," obscures the point, but the message of Rouvikonas isn't obscure:

US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt has expressed his confidence that Greek police will investigate an early Wednesday vandal attack by self-styled anarchists on his residence in Athens.

Members of the Rouvikonas (Greek for Rubicon) anti-establishment group on Wednesday morning splashed paint at the wall outside the residence of US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt in Athens.
The members of the group drove up to the residence on motorcycles and fled immediately after the stunt.
Police say they have detained eight suspects over the incident.

Speaking at the 7th annual Exposec-Defenseworld Conference in Athens, US Ambassador to Athens Geoffrey Pyatt stressed that Greece's geostrategic location is key to security and stability in the Southeast Mediterranean.
