Samaras to meet Erdogan on sidelines of NATO summit in Wales

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and newly-elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet on the sidelines of the upcoming NATO summit in Wales, according to reports.

The unofficial meeting was reportedly requested by Erdogan who recently irked the governments in Athens and Nicosia with calls for a two-state solution on the divided island.

Nicosia disappointed at Erdogan's two-state solution comments

One day after Recep Tayyip Erdogan pressed for a two-state solution on Cyprus, President Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday expressed disappointment over comments made by the new Turkish president while placing his hopes of reaching a settlement on the European Union and Nicosia’s strategic partners.

Athens condemns Erdogan comments about Cyprus

Athens reacted angrily on Monday to calls by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a “two-state” solution to the Cyprus problem and claims that Greece is not “doing its duty” as a guarantor power, saying the comments were “disappointing” and “simply confirm Ankara’s persistence in its aggressive policy” on Cyprus.

Erdogan visits Turkish-occupied Cyprus

Recep Tayyip Erdogan was on Monday expected in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus in his first official visit as new Turkey President.

Erdogan, who was sworn in as his country's first popularly elected president last weeek, was scheduled to meet for talks with Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu ahead of a joint press conference.

“Turkey is very important to us, because we have the strategic goal to diversify our energy supplies,” Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev told the Bulgarian National Radio.
